Friends of the Vertical Negatives Collection
The vertical negatives are aerial photographs of Ireland taken by the Air Corps from the 1930s to the 1980s. They are a unique collection and the only aerial photography (state) record from this era and so, are of historical significance as they show the growth of towns/cities over a 60 year period. Due to the risk of deterioration of the older negative films, the Irish Military Archives recently undertook a large-scale digitisation project of the vertical negative films and the corresponding flight maps.

"Friends of the Vertical Negatives Collection" is an online group set up to assist with the indexing and mapping of the Irish Air Corps Vertical Negatives Collection. The coordinator of the group is S.C. Healy, who will also act as a data controller for information provided in this form.

The main goal of this project is the development of a web-based resource for the Military Archives in Ireland to make available the Air Corps Aerial Photographs and Vertical Negative collections online.

The project is looking for volunteers to be a part of the archiving process by helping to add descriptive information through the identification of landmarks in the images. Volunteers may also wish to assist by mapping landmarks onto the V.Neg maps. This process is carried out online through a private group on FaceBook and Google maps. Upon submitting this form, you will soon receive an invitation to join the Friends of the Vertical Negatives Collection Facebook Group. Volunteers can contribute as little or as much time as they wish - day or night. Volunteers can opt out of the project at any time and have their details removed - by emailing the coordinator (details provided below).

Why get involved?
Your contributions to the project will make a genuine difference. You will be a part of an online community which is curating a unique collection, being the only aerial photography (state) record from this era. It is hoped that the images and plotting maps will be made available to the public in a web-based resource in the near future. However, this will not be possible until a lot of images are indexed and mapped. Providing tags and descriptions of landmarks on the images will greatly assist in the creation of essential finding aids, speeding up the process to get the resource online.

As collections are compiled, they will be uploaded to the FaceBook Group (Friends of the Vertical Negatives) and participants will be sent an automatic email notification to make them aware of the new upload. The privacy of contributors will be respected at all times.
