PIPPIN AUDITION GUIDELINES AND SUGGESTIONS

We are excited that you’d like to audition for Pippin, a groundbreaking musical with a coming of age story. We expect that this production will follow the success of the previous five years and look forward to welcoming a cast diverse in age, race, and experience level.

The Roles Below are Available for Audition, with flexibility on age ranges. As you’ll see, there are many possibilities, including just the chorus.

BERTHE Pippin's saucy grandmother. A brassy woman full of wisdom, grace, and sass. She tries to help
Pippin and encourages him to live his life to the fullest.
Gender: Female // Eligible Age: 35- 75 yrs old // Vocal Range: E3 - C5; Mezzo/Belter or Soprano with low notes
Dance: Not required (but is a plus!)

CATHERINE A widow and mother. She is a beautiful and a hopeless romantic, who possesses graceful
elegance. Encounters Pippin at his lowest point and eventually falls in love with him.
Gender: Female // Eligible Age: 16-36 yrs old // Vocal Range: F#3 - Db5; Mezzo or Soprano
Dance: Not required

CHARLEMAGNE Pippin's demanding father. In the original production, he is the King of the Holy Roman Empire, and in our production, he plays the similar role as a Type A, intense, somewhat bossy, arrogant, CEO. Charlemagne is more
comfortable wielding a sword than breaking bread. He wears his years with great pride.
Gender: Male // Eligible Age: 35-65 yrs old // Vocal Range: G2 - E4; Baritone
Dance: Not required

FASTRADA Pippin's conniving stepmother, she is both beautiful and smart. Devious, crafty, cunning,
untrustworthy. Dedicated to gaining a leadership role for her darling son, Lewis.
Gender: Female // Eligible Age: 30-55 yrs old // Vocal Range: A3 - F5; Mezzo or Soprano
Dance: Not required

LEADING PLAYER - MALE or FEMALE
The ultimate 'ring leader.' Masterfully charming and manipulative, the Leading Player is a
chameleon of sorts. Guides Pippin through his own story and tries to intervene at the end.
Excellent mover. Obsessed with putting on a great show for the audience.
Gender: Male or Female // Eligible Age: 16+ // Vocal Range: Db3 - Ab4; Huge range and versatility
Dance: Required. Role requires strong sense of physicality and movement. Experience not
necessarily required, but dance audition required for this role.

PIPPIN - Our story's young and confused protagonist. He is longing to find his purpose in life. Naive,
innocent, and discontent. Eventually finds love, and meaning in life, with Catherine and Theo/Thea..
Gender: Male // Eligible Age: 17-27 yrs old // Vocal Range: G2 - Ab4; Tenor or Bari with a solid high Ab

LEWIS Charlemagne and Fastrada’s son. Strong and not bright. Pippin’s half-brother and after Pippin,
heir to the family business even if he doesn't necessarily subscribe to the same philosophies of greed and hunger for power. Addicted to the physical, Lewis loves weight lifting, Lewis loves wrestling, but
most of all, Lewis loves Lewis. Requires good physicality.
Gender: Male // Eligible Age: 17-27 yrs old; Bari or Tenor
Dance: Not required.

THEO or THEA- Catherine’s son or daughter, must be able to sing well as a soloist. (we will cast the right person). Male or Female, 7-14 yrs old.

ENSEMBLE A – DANCE+VOCAL
Heavily featured throughout. Ensemble “Players” play many other roles; they represent the
influences and voices in Pippin’s head. Includes substantial and difficult choreography.
Gender: Male or Female // Eligible Age: 13+
Dance: Required. Role requires strong sense of physicality and movement. Experience not
necessarily required, but dance audition required for this role.

ENSEMBLE B – VOCAL ONLY
Same as Ensemble A, excluding dance requirements. Ensemble B will be involved throughout the
show, but not quite as front-and-center as Ensemble A, and thus fewer rehearsals. Gender: Male or Female
