Whereas the economic crisis’ effect on employment opportunities for current GULC students is unprecedented, creating the most challenging legal market in recent history;

Whereas the administration and faculty have an obligation to ensure all students have the tools needed to secure post-graduation employment;

Whereas externships have proved invaluable at providing students with exposure to a desired field of law, an opportunity to network with practicing attorneys, and the ability to foster direct professional connections that will aid in finding post-graduation employment;

Whereas employers view externship experiences highly favorably, particularly in a downturn economic climate when they must differentiate between many qualified job applicants;

Whereas the city of Washington, DC can uniquely provide for a wide array of intensive legal opportunities for GULC students during the academic year;

Whereas in a comparison of law school externship programs, GULC currently has the least substantial externship program of peer institutions and other law schools in Washington, DC;

Whereas many students are unable to accept internships unless they be enrolled in the externship program because the employers mandate that students must receive academic credit;

Whereas the externship program mandates that students must work at least ten hours per week, and students often work double that amount to gain substantive exposure to the jobs;

Whereas having the externship credits count towards the six pass/fail credit-limit undermines the purpose of the six pass/fail credits, which is for students to broaden their GULC education by taking courses outside the range of their comfort zone;

Be it hereby resolved:
1. That the SBA advocate for increasing the number of credits an externship provides from two credits to four or more credits
2. That the SBA advocate for students to be allowed to enroll in more than one externship during their GULC law career
3. That the SBA advocate that the academic credits allotted to the externship program should count separately from the six pass/fail credits
4. That the SBA advocate for GULC to expand experiential learning courses that allow for a substantive professional component
5. That the SBA will collaborate with the faculty to study how students can demonstrate the substantive and meaningful learning gained through their externships
6. That the SBA will collaborate with GULC to study how to expand the externship program while not imposing a high administrative burden on GULC
