Program DescriptionDiversity-Movement Educating Cross Cultural Communities (D-MECCa) is a intergroup dialogue program focused on dialogue, social justice education, training, and advocacy. The program aims to positively impact the student experience, shift and transform campus culture, and aid Rutgers University-Newark in building the capacity to create a sustainable thriving community of culturally fluent and interculturally competent students, faculty, staff and larger Newark Community. This initiative provides resources, leadership development, and skill building for those with a desire to engage in diversity work inside and outside of the classroom in order to foster an inclusive and respectful campus environment.
Program Goals*Engage campus community in genuine dialogue to bridge differences across social identity groups, cultivate leadership, promote civility, and ultimately encourage action.*Provide educational and advocacy platforms that reaffirms diversity, mutual respect of differences, and inclusion across RU-N’s campus.*Develop student’s capacity and foster dialogue facilitation skills to manage intergroup conflicts on campus. *Train and support staff, faculty, students and community members related to issues of social inequities and how they operate within the RU-N’s environment.*Provide educational programs and workshops focused on building community cultural and competencies around social justice issues. *Increase awareness social inequities that affect marginalized communities through the exploration of the identities, worldviews, and experiences that individuals bring with them into community. *Create pathways that facilitate learning and understanding between groups.
