Integral to our gallery, volunteers help with the everyday running of the space; developing their administration, installation and curatorial skills. Volunteering at Verge links you with a network of other students, arts practitioners in our program and the USU.
Description of DutiesThis role provides support and assistance with the general day-to-day running of Verge Gallery, including but not limited to installing exhibitions, painting and touching up walls, tidying storerooms, maintaining equipment, running errands, assisting with exhibition opening nights and events, liaising with artists, greeting visitors and invigilating.
CommitmentThis role is designed for University of Sydney art students wishing to gain exposure to and experience in an art gallery environment.
Verge Gallery is open Tuesday–Friday 10am-5pm and Saturdays 11am-4pm. Verge volunteers are rostered on for 3.5 hour shift once per week on a 6 month basis.
Weekday morning shift runs 10am-1:30pm.Weekday afternoon shift runs 1:30pm-5pm.Event shifts runs 5:00pm–8:30pm (Saturday shifts available when events are scheduled)
During your shift you will receive training in gallery exhibition installation, gallery maintenance, gallery assistance and general customer service. For dedicated volunteers there may be opportunities to adjust your duties and training to meet with your interest so that your volunteer experience remains engaging and rewarding.
Desired Skills, Experience & Characteristics
This role is designed for University of Sydney art students and those wishing to gain exposure to and experience in an art gallery environment. Applicants should be able to demonstrate the following: - Genuine interest in art and/or the art community- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills- Reliable and punctual- Flexible, eagerness to learn and willing to help with a wide range of tasks- Able to work independently and as part of a team- Hard worker and able to take initiative
