Considerations: before you apply
Please read carefully through this section before beginning the application process.
People contact us when they are feeling desperate, their lives are difficult and they are in pain. Some people may be thinking of taking their own lives.
I understand that some of the things I listen to whilst being a helpline volunteer may be difficult.
Even though you may want to give someone advice, our role is to listen and provide callers with emotional support and information about their options.
I understand that I may not tell people who contact us what to do.
Callers may make decisions or tell you about things which you would not approve of.
I am able to listen to callers in a non-judgmental manner and support them regardless of their decisions or choices.
You will often have to cope with not knowing what happened to a caller after you take their call and may have to hear about difficult things which happened to them.
I am able to cope with not knowing about what happens after a call and/or listening to difficult things which callers disclose.
