You already have some knowledge on what coding is and want to learn more. Your next step is to study the exact requirements needed for the job position you found earlier this week about developing apps for educational purposes. Maybe it would be a good idea to look for similar job opportunities that interest you, in order to define the skills and knowledge you need to be able to apply. At a glance, candidates should have good to advanced knowledge of at least one coding language and its syntax, the ability to write lines of code, the skills to code successfully and work on tasks as part of a team. Hmm… Before applying for such positions, you definitely need some training, even qualifications, to prove your skills. You feel like a fish out of water again.

Understanding coding languages

Relax… Take it easy, step by step. It shouldn’t be that difficult, right? First, you need to look at the different coding languages used in the industry today and understand their distinct features. The job postings mention HTML, PHP, C++, Ruby, JavaScript, Python etc.… Wow, so many… Should a coder know all of them? Do they have commonalities, or does each one stand out for a special feature? You have already learnt that a computer’s native tongue is binary (Os & 1s), a tongue that we, as humans, do not comprehend. So, coding languages allow us to translate these abstract 1s & 0s into a language that makes sense. They allow us to translate our thoughts into instructions the computer can understand by using words, letters, symbols and numbers.
Read the following article to get an idea of the different coding languages used today and what makes each one of them stand out: https://www.computerscience.org/resources/computer-programming-languages/.

Q1. Can you match the coding languages to their special features?
1. Used for creating web pages and apps and supporting front-end (user interface) and back-end (behind-the-scenes interface) development. *
2. Used for building websites and software programs and performing data analysis, desktop graphical user interfaces (GUIs), artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning.
*
3. Used for creating dynamic web pages that work with databases.
*
4. Used for creating the structure of a web page (paragraphs, links, tables and images).
