There will be three components to the application. Applications must include the following to be considered:
1.Recommendation from the nominator
2.Commitment from a mentor
3.Student application

A nominator should know the student very well and be able to speak to the student’s leadership abilities, strengths, and space for youth development and growth.

The mentor should be an individual that could be able to :
1.Support the student in preparation for public speaking event
2.Help the student prepare and pack for conference/programs
3.Help the student host an exchange with their community
4.Help the student share their experiences with their school or community (e.g. through articles in the press, presentations at community events)
5.Engaging the student in leadership opportunities in their local communities
6.Transporting students to and from airport

It is possible for the nominator and mentor to be the same individual. They will need to fill out both forms.

What is the Arctic Youth Ambassadors Program?
The Arctic Youth Ambassadors program brings together diverse youth from across Alaska to serve as ambassadors for their communities and country in building awareness at home and abroad about their lives in the Arctic. Changes in the Arctic did not happen overnight, and some of the challenges the region (and the world) faces, such as climate change, cannot be solved overnight. Younger generations will play an important role in addressing these challenges. The Arctic Youth Ambassadors is one group of knowledgeable youth from across the State who understand the Arctic and its people and can explain it from a youth perspective for their peers across the United States and around the world.

The program launched in 2015 concurrently with the U.S. Chairmanship of the Arctic Council. The first cohort of ambassadors served from 2015-2017. The 2017-2019 cohort will coincide with the US Chairmanship of the Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna (CAFF), the biodiversity working group of the Arctic Council. The youth ambassadors will share both their local perspective on Arctic issues and priorities and new knowledge they will gain by engaging with partners and leaders from around the world. They’ll add their voices and solutions to a global conversation about how to sustain communities, cultures and the environment in a changing Arctic.

The Arctic Youth Ambassadors program was originally established by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and U.S. Department of State in partnership with nonprofit partner Alaska Geographic. This page is hosted by Alaska Geographic.

Ambassadors will participate in a variety of programs and projects and are expected to share stories from Alaska about the changing Arctic through local and national media, attend Arctic related trainings and seminars, participate in exchanges between rural and urban communities, and participate in Arctic Council-related events and presentations at conferences.

Experiences will vary for each participant, and may include engaging in one of the many Arctic Council-related meetings and events taking place in Anchorage, Barrow, Kotzebue, and Juneau; participating in an Anchorage-based Arctic Youth Ambassadors summit in January 2018; and additional leadership training opportunities (dates yet to be determined) . Additionally, Arctic Youth Ambassadors will document their experiences through social media or other creative means such as writing or video in order to share their stories and experiences as an ambassador with their community and beyond.
