All United Church of Chapel Hill members and friends are invited to attend the pilgrimage to the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama. The purpose of this journey is to acknowledge the living legacy of white supremacy in our country, learn the history of white racial violence in our state from Reconstruction to Jim Crow, and confess our participation in the systems and structures of racial oppression.

To prepare for this pilgrimage, we ask that you make every effort to attend the Wednesday evening study sessions with Pastor Cameron throughout the summer (June 6th, 13th, and 20th; July 11th, 18th, and 25th; and August 1st).

Participants will be asked to commit to reading two books:
- "The Cross and the Lynching Tree" (Wednesdays in June) by the black liberation theologian James Cone, and
- "Just Mercy" (Wednesdays in July), the memoir of Bryan Stevenson, the founder of the Equal Justice Initiative.

We will also familiarize ourselves with EJI reports on racial violence and explore the history of lynching in our own community.
 
Trip Details:

We will depart from UCCH early on Friday, August 3rd and return in the late-evening on Sunday, August 5th. The approximate cost of the trip (not including meals) for transportation (bus), memorial/museum tickets, and hotel rooms is $500, but may fluctuate based on the number of attendees. If this is a hardship, please let us know.
