About the Book 
Drawing on personal stories, research, and historical events, Bettina L. Love, an esteemed educator, offers a vision of educational justice inspired by the rebellious spirit and methods of abolitionists.

Bettina Love persuasively argues that:
  • Educators must teach students about racial violence, oppression, and how to make sustainable change in their communities through radical civic initiatives and movements.
  • The US educational system is maintained by and profits from the suffering of children of color.
  • Instead of trying to repair a flawed system, educational reformers offer survival tactics in the forms of test-taking skills, acronyms, grit labs, and character education, which Love calls the educational survival complex.
  • To dismantle the educational survival complex and to achieve educational freedom—not merely reform—teachers, parents, and community leaders must approach education with the imagination, determination, boldness, and urgency of an abolitionist.

Participants must provide their own book, We Want to do More Than Survive: Abolitionist Teaching and the Pursuit of Educational Freedom by Bettina L. Love.

Outside of Meeting Time Commitment
4-5 hours of reading between each meeting

Who & How Much
Open to all school staff in the Western Regional Educator Network (WREN). School staff includes teachers, principals, counselors, other licensed staff, EAs/IAs, and others who provide support for schools and youth.
Level of learning experience: Intermediate Level- Primarily focused on a deeper dive into the topic.
Ideal level of participant pre-knowledge: Intermediate Level- This offering may be more suited to folx who have already done some foundational learning on the topic.

Registration fees are paid for by the WREN regardless of attendance record.

Afternoon Cohort: 2:30-4:30pm
OR
Evening Cohort: 5-7pm
Note: The WREN is not providing substitutes.

Stipend
Participants who attend and sign into at least 6 meetings will be eligible for a $560 stipend paid after the conclusion of the series.
Participants who attend and sign into at least 5 meetings will be eligible for a $448 stipend paid after the conclusion of the series.  
*Stipend eligibility is dependent on attendance and attendance sign-ins because being in community with one another helps us meet our AIM
