Guided Internship Program Application
Thank you for your interest in the Thoreau College Guided Internship Program!

The Guided Internship is intended to be a highly personalized experience in which qualified interns are paired with committed local host organizations, businesses, and farms. The purpose of this application is to learn more about your interests, goals, and prior experiences to help us to pair you with the right hosts.

The Guided Internship Program welcomes applications from graduates of the Thoreau College Semester Program, as well as individuals who can demonstrate sufficient self-direction, diligence, and maturity to benefit from the program. It is intended to be an extended experience of at least one semester (5-6 months), or up to a full year. Applicants interested in a shorter experience should consider the Thoreau College Summer Internship Program. You should plan to begin your internship in either January or August. Applications will be considered at any time, but please give enough time before the date you hope to begin (ideally 2 or more months) so that we can pair you with an appropriate host or hosts.

Please contact us if you have questions at admin@thoreaucollege.org.

The application process for the Guided Internship has four steps.

Phase 1: Preliminary Application

Get the process started by completing this form today! Please contact us at admin@thoreaucollege.org if you have any questions or if you would like a Word document version of the application.

Phase 2: Preliminary Interview

Once you have completed the initial application form, we will schedule a conversation with you to discuss your interests and goals for the program as well as to answer any questions you have about the program, Thoreau College, or our location in Viroqua, Wisconsin.

Phase 3: Letter of Interest, Resume, and References

If it seems like you might be a good fit for the program, you will be invited to submit a letter of interest, a personal resume, and 2-3 references who would be able to speak to your qualifications for the program.

Phase 4: Letter of Acceptance and Financial Contribution Pledge

Once you have been accepted to the program, we will send you a formal letter of acceptance and invite you to participate in a financial pledge conversation. Thoreau College is committed to making participation in our programs financially accessible for all admitted participants. In this conversation, we will share the financial structure and needs of the program and discuss how you would be able to contribute to financial health of the program, which may include provision of housing and some meals. We will also discuss the specific internship activities you would like to participate in more detail.
