The mornings are an active exploration of Math & Science extending students beyond their current grade level. After a brief lecture, students participate in hands-on learning activities including topics from geometry, physics, material science, chemistry, structural engineering and psychology. Lessons and activities are directly applicable to the afternoon project studio, making the instruction relevant.
Afternoons are devoted to Real Projects that will exist in real-world.
Project: WayFinders | MADE IN Cambridge immerses middle and high school students uniquely in Cambridge’s thriving economy. Students learn about past and current stories symbolizing Cambridge’s history of making from candy, soap and glass to tech and bio-tech. As the stories are uncovered, youth realize the power of design, science, technology and entrepreneurship to improve lives, creating connections to these dynamic fields in new ways.
The stories are brought to life through a youth designed walking tour allowing their peers and others to discover the exciting world of Cambridge Makers. Tour destinations are marked by a custom designed sculpture and signage installation (marker) reflecting the character of the location. The Looking Glass to be installed April 2018 in Kendall Square Galaxy Park was designed in this course in 2017.
Since WayFinders is a real project that will exist in the real world, it can not be completed in the summer session. Therefore, project will start in April as an after-school program at Cambridge Street Upper School. Although not required, students participating in April session will be given preference for admission into Summer session. More information: https://goo.gl/forms/NCImcDUpUWIPGsOC3
