Aug 16// Your Body, Your Self: Techniques for Anxiety and Depression with Nicholas Duran (free class for VR/video experiment)
Hello! If you are reading this, you have been invited by Nicholas or Stacy to participate in an experiment in online teaching and learning with Nicholas. My name is Stacy Dawson Stearns (Pieter community member and Monday Morning Class at Pieter curator). I am collaborating with my husband Jonathon Stearns (digital media creator) on some experiments to bring somatic-based teachings to the public through online video platforms (2d and VR). We have asked some instructors to offer free classes so we can test film them in the teaching moment with actual learners in order to discover meaningful, effective ways to translate body-based teachings into video formats. **This class will not be turned into an online course- it is our research, but we do ask to use the footage to assist us in moving forward-see “Consent” below** Nicholas has prepared wonderful offerings! We hope you will join us.

Class Description:

Coming to know our bodies from the inside out deepens our sense of self and how grounded we feel. The field of somatics brings us closer to understanding the connection between physical and emotional stress in our lives.

The discoveries we make through somatic explorations are immediately factual and don’t need to be mediated through science or medicine. We learn to self-regulate overwhelming emotions and how to respond more appropriately and effectively. Through practical application, we recognize and begin to undo habituated patterns of pain and tension. Those of us living with anxiety and/or depression become empowered by the realization of our innate ability to heal and change our functioning.

Lessons used in this workshop are adapted from various mind-body practices, including the Feldenkrais Method, the Alexander Technique, and Reiki, among others. Exercises will be easy to learn and require no previous training or experience with somatics. Their practical application should not replace medication or psychotherapy but used in conjunction to support the complexity of daily life. There will be partner work involving intentional touch, which will be optional and introduced sensitively. Group discussion will offer the opportunity to share our experience and anything shared will remain confidential.
