Coming to know our bodies from the inside out deepens our sense of self and how grounded we feel. The field of somatics brings us closer to understanding the connection between physical and emotional stress in our lives.
The discoveries we make through somatic explorations are immediately factual and don’t need to be mediated through science or medicine. We learn to self-regulate overwhelming emotions and how to respond more appropriately and effectively. Through practical application, we recognize and begin to undo habituated patterns of pain and tension. Those of us living with anxiety and/or depression become empowered by the realization of our innate ability to heal and change our functioning.
Lessons used in this workshop are adapted from various mind-body practices, including the Feldenkrais Method, the Alexander Technique, and Reiki, among others. Exercises will be easy to learn and require no previous training or experience with somatics. Their practical application should not replace medication or psychotherapy but used in conjunction to support the complexity of daily life. There will be partner work involving intentional touch, which will be optional and introduced sensitively. Group discussion will offer the opportunity to share our experience and anything shared will remain confidential.
