Thank you for considering becoming a mentor for this group of talented and aspirational Afghan women. The students on this programme are based in Afghanistan or have been displaced to surrounding countries. Many of them had to leave their studies at university before completing after the Taliban took over, while others had just finished high school and were not able to continue studying any further.
The purpose of this mentoring programme is to support the women to develop their English language skills so they can access higher education programmes online and to help them feel connected to a global academic community.
The mentoring programme will follow a 6-week teaching programme lead by the University of Cambridge and Voice of America. Through this course the students developed skills in reading, writing, listening, speaking, and general study skills so they can work towards taking standardised English exams, such as IELTS or TOEFL. The mentoring programme will focus particularly on developing writing and speaking skills.
Each student will have a one-to-one mentor for 6 x 1-hour sessions. They will also be part of a mentoring circle of about 5 students that will focus on writing skills, which will run for 6 weeks. These mentoring sessions can be run flexibly to fit around your timetable. A full training and orientation course will be provided before you begin and you will be supported throughout the programme if any need arises. A training will be held online, details to follow.
If you complete the trainings and decide to continue as a mentor then we will use the responses here to match you to a mentee.
