Chancellor Khosla:
Postdoctoral Scholar Dr. Li Jiang is facing retaliation and discrimination after blowing the whistle on her supervisor who pressured her to participate in what she found to be the falsification of data. Her supervisor retaliated by refusing to renew her contract. Because Dr. Jiang is in the United States on a visa, this means that she could soon have to leave the country and lose her health insurance despite being more than 7 months pregnant.
Her supervisor’s retaliation has caused Li anxiety, belly pain, insomnia and even hair loss. If UC doesn’t extend her contract by this coming Sunday, Li could be forced to leave the country which could put her at high risk of pregnancy complications.
Research clearly shows a “leaky pipeline” for women in STEM. This is not acceptable in our workplace. We demand real reproductive rights: a workplace in which women and people of all genders have income security, safety from retaliation, humane benefits and living wages.
We demand that Li’s employment be restored, and that UCSD properly investigate the abuse and the scientific misconduct in this lab.
