LEO Climate Letter to Gov. Polis
A letter thanking Gov. Polis for his climate action and asking him to stay committed to meeting state wide climate goals.
Governor Jared Polis
136 State Capitol
Denver, Colorado 80203
Dear Governor Polis:
As elected officials representing towns, cities, and counties across Colorado, we intimately understand how climate change is undermining our economy, threatening our quality of life, and putting our residents at risk.
You articulated a bold vision for climate action during your campaign, and during your time in office you and the legislature have made significant strides toward realizing this vision. Important rulemakings by entities like the Air Quality Control Commission and the Public Utilities Commission, the GHG Roadmap process, and your Colorado Electric Vehicle Plan are just a few examples. These are all vital elements of a comprehensive approach to achieving Colorado's bold climate vision.
Not only does this work help reduce the worst impacts of climate change, it also saves money for Colorado families and businesses, improves the quality of the air we all breathe, creates jobs across the state, enables Colorado to sustain a national leadership role on clean energy, and positions Colorado's economy to be highly competitive in the decades ahead.
We are writing to thank you for your commitment and dedication on these vital issues. We are proud that Colorado has become a national leader in adopting visionary carbon pollution goals. The stakes are high, and we strongly encourage CDPHE and the AQCC to implement these goals as quickly as possible. You have built an exceptional team across your administration that understands the existential dangers of climate disruption, grasps the enormous opportunities associated with bold climate action, and is able and willing to work across agencies and disciplines to put Colorado on track to meet the state's climate goals.
As local elected officials representing communities across the state, we are on the front lines of both the pandemic and the escalating impacts of climate change. The pandemic has further underscored how vulnerable our economy and energy systems are; continuing to burn fossil fuels is increasing the likelihood of more and more severe economic disruptions. The pandemic and the ensuring economic downturn make it all the more obvious and urgent that we continue our transition to a clean energy economy.
We look forward to continuing our collaborative engagement with you and your administration on this crucial work, in our local communities and across the state.
Sincerely,
