Tuesday, October 24: “Developing, Deploying, and Managing Technology for Community: Engineering Informed by Human Values”
This one-time seminar will be led by Jun Sawada, Chairman of the Board of Nippon Telephone and Telegraph (NTT, the world’s largest telecommunications firm) during his visit to Smith College. He is concerned with the failure to date of new telecommunications and information technologies to reduce inequality and to build community, and is interested in new, communitarian philosophical foundations for thinking about the development, deployment, and management of technologies, a topic he would like to discuss with the Smith college faculty.

This short-term project will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 24. Fellows will meet together at the Kahn Institute, 4:30-6:30 for a seminar followed by dinner together at the Conference Center.

There will also be a public panel discussion with Sawada-san, Professor Deguchi, and Jay Garfield that day at noon in the Campus Center, Carol Room.

Application Deadline: Friday, Sept. 22, 2023. Applicants will be notified about their acceptance by Thursday, Sept. 28 and will need to confirm their ability to participate by Thursday, Oct. 5. If you have questions about the project, please feel free to contact kahninstitute@smith.edu for more information.
