Yukata or Happi Coat Application

Bon Dance season is coming! If you lost your yukata & obi or happi coat to the wildfires, or have always wanted to wear one to an Obon, we can help get you a new one.

Fill out this form if you are eligible to apply for this program. Fill out one form PER APPLICANT. As funds are limited, this form will close without notice once we begin to process applications.

  • Must be a resident of Lahaina/Upcountry displaced from the wildfires.
  • All ages and sizes and genders are welcome.
  • Priority shall be given to members of the temples in Lahaina.
  • Accepted applicants can go to Mise Kimono in Queen Kaahumanu Center to pick out or order a yukata (and 2nd-hand obi) or new happi coat. Mise Kimono has pre-selected modest choices and options for this program, but should you decide to add or upgrade your fabric or style, you may do so at your own expense.
  • Accepted applicants may also present JCSM with receipts if you purchased elsewhere. We can reimburse you up to $100.
Applicants will receive a CONFIRMATION EMAIL notifying them to proceed and visit Mise Kimono at the mall.
  • All outfits must be ordered with Mise Kimono on or before August 31, 2024. Those who didn't pursue the benefit past this date shall forfeit this gift.

This project is funded by the Japanese Cultural Society's Ganbare Maui program. We raise funds to support Maui's recovery from the Aug. 8 wildfires in opportunities to preserve and perpetuate Japanese culture. As many historic structures were burned, we aim to help keep traditions alive and support efforts that will do so.
