The Emergency Winter Shelter Volunteer Application for Individuals 2018-19
Volunteer Guidelines
Volunteers play a very important role in running the Emergency Winter Shelter. We could not function as a ministry to the poor without the generous gifts of your time, talents, and hospitality.

The Emergency Winter Shelter opens when the overnight low temperature is expected to be 15 degrees or lower. The location is First United Methodist Church 216 E Highland Ave., Elgin, Il. 60123. We run 3 shifts: 6pm-10pm (set up, guest check in, serve light meal, visit with guests, supervise guests), 10pm-2am (clean up, supervise guests, check in any new guests), 2am-7am(clean up, supervise guests). Shifts can be combined (ie, 10pm-7am).

Because we so heavily depend on our volunteers, we ask that you observe the following guidelines:

• Be punctual and conscientious. Arrive to the shelter at your designated time and be appropriately
dressed and ready to work. If you are not able to make your volunteer shift or if you will be late,
please give sufficient notice to the coordinators. Coordinators for this year are Pedro and Lucy Gomez of House of Restoration Community Outreach -224-856-1214

• Do not give your personal information, including your full name, telephone number, and address,
to guests, and do not give out money.

• Practice the buddy system when entering and leaving the building. Feel free to ask staff to
accompany you!

• Immediately report inappropriate behavior or anything that makes you uncomfortable to staff.

• Take advantage of training opportunities for volunteers (time to be determined).

These guidelines are for your protection and are intended to help you make wise decisions about your
involvement with the people we serve. Failure to follow these guidelines or to conduct yourself in a
professional manner may be reason to terminate your volunteer relationship with The Emergency Winter Shelter.

Once your application is reviewed, you will receive a link to our calendar sign-up. This is an online sign up calendar where you will place your name on the day(s) and shift(s) you would like to work. If you know that you are available every Tuesday, for example, and want to complete the spaces of the calendar for every Tuesday through the winter, feel free to do so.

**The following application will be kept confidential and held by the coordinators Lucy and Pedro Gomez and House of Restoration Community Outreach. Applications will not be shared with future coordinators without your express permission.
