Statement of parliamentarians from the Americas and the Caribbean on Artificial Intelligence

In light of the growing global debates on the transformative potential of artificial intelligence and the calls from different sectors to address its risks and opportunities and develop measures to regulate its scope, we, parliamentarians of the Americas and the Caribbean, express our desire to contribute to this global dialogue by advocating for models of digital governance centered on democracy and the rule of law, peace, human rights, justice, transparency, poverty eradication and equality.

Therefore, through the Digital Caucus of the ParlAmericas Open Parliament Network, parliamentarians of the Americas and the Caribbean call on the relevant stakeholders in the hemisphere, including private companies, experts, universities, and civil society organizations, to collaborate with us on artificial intelligence governance proposals that recognize our contexts, needs, cultural and linguistic diversity; seek to remedy, not exacerbate, existing social and economic inequalities; reflect our commitment to the common good; and incorporate perspectives from the Global South.

Based on the above, we, the undersigned legislators, express our commitment to working through the Digital Caucus of the Open Parliament Network of ParlAmericas to contribute to the identification and establishment of the most suitable mechanisms to ensure that the transformations arising from the ongoing development of artificial intelligence and other related technological advances protect human rights and democracy, foster sustainable development, and promote inclusion and social cohesion.
