Spring 2023 PAL Placement Form (130, 136, 145, & Continuing 139)
Welcome to the PAL (Partners At Learning) Program
http://palprogram.ucsd.edu/

We are the service-learning division of UC San Diego's Department of Education Studies.

Before completing this form, please carefully review the following details about our classes:

In addition to completing this form, to receive enrollment authorization, all new EDS practicum students are required to complete a background check form.  Please visit: https://eds.ucsd.edu/_files/BackgroundCheck%20form%20final.pdf.
Completed forms should be emailed to Sheila Keegan at skeegan@ucsd.edu.

Do NOT enroll in any PAL course if:
-  you have previously failed any EDS practicum course,
-  have been convicted of a felony, or have a pending felony criminal case, or
-  you are required to register as a sex offender.

Students who have previously withdrawn from any EDS practicum course should consult with the PAL Program Advisor, Sheila Keegan (skeegan@ucsd.edu), before submitting this placement form.

ATTENTION CURRENT OR POTENTIAL EDS MAJORS AND MINORS: Students who fail any EDS practicum course including any PAL course are not allowed to enroll in any additional practicum courses. If you are an EDS major or minor, this may impact your ability to complete the courses required for your degree.

A TB test is required.  Bring a copy of the results with you to the first day of class. You may receive your TB test through the Student Health Center. Please plan ahead - it can sometimes take several weeks to get an test appointment at Student Health. A TB test is valid for 12 months, however, some schools/districts may require a more recent TB test and additional screening.  You will be advised accordingly once you receive your school placement during the first week of class.

We partner with schools in lower income neighborhoods throughout San Diego County. Estimate a 25-35 minute commute (by car) from campus to your assigned school site.

If you have a friend or roommate you'd like to take the class with, we can put you at the same school site and in the same discussion section.

You don't need a car to take a PAL class.  If you don't have transportation we will place you at a school near public transportation (bus or trolley) or help you find a carpool. Zipcars are also a transportation option: http://www.zipcar.com/universities/the-university-of-california-san-diego.

PAL classes only meet once a week so attendance is mandatory in all lectures and discussions.

All PAL classes require a minimum of 40 practicum/field hours. These hours must be logged consistently throughout the quarter and completed by the end of week 10.

In order to fulfill the on-site PAL practicum requirements, students need to be fully vaccinated for COVID 19 including a third "booster" shot.

To complete your 40 hours make sure to reserve at least 5 hours per week during school hours (approximately 7:30am-3:00pm) to work at your assigned school.
