Sign up to volunteer for Sen. Stadelman's Second Chances Summit (Attorneys)
Overview of Volunteer Opportunity

Thank you for your signing up to volunteer at our Second Chances Summit, an outreach partnership between Prairie State Legal Services and State Senator Steve Stadelman. Volunteer attorneys are essential to the success of this event, and your willingness to participate is greatly appreciated.

Working under the supervision of PSLS, you will review documents that summarize the court records of individual summit attendees and apply your knowledge of the Illinois Criminal Identification Act to determine the attendee's eligibility to expunge or seal his or her records. As a volunteer attorney, you will meet one-on-one with summit attendees to explain their criminal histories and types of relief they are eligible to receive. If they are eligible to expunge or seal their records, you will prepare their petitions, obtain their signatures and explain what they can expect to happen after their petitions are filed.

Volunteering at the summit requires meticulous attention to detail and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
New legislation affecting the Criminal Identification Act went into effect January 1, 2017. Even if you have prior experience in these types of cases, you will need to attend a training course to learn about the new provisions in the law and the process we employ to achieve an efficient and enriching summit experience.

The training will be held at Prairie State Legal Services, located at 303 N. Main St. Suite 600. If you have any questions, call PSLS Pro-Bono Coordinator Wendy Crouch at 815-668-4402.
