Sign On to NM NFS' 2025 Open Letter to NM Democratic Legislators

As another legislative session comes to a close, New Mexicans are left without meaningful climate action, despite a Democratic majority in the legislature. Once again, grassroots climate and environmental justice groups, led by communities of color must demand more from our elected officials and hold them accountable for their failure to act.

While a handful of Democratic legislators introduced promising bills aimed at reducing the harms of oil and gas pollution—such as establishing health buffer zones around schools, banning toxic forever chemicals in fracking, requiring operators to clean up and remediate inactive wells, and putting an end to illegal toxic air emissions these efforts were repeatedly blocked. Tragically, many Democratic lawmakers sided with big oil and gas interests, aligning with Republicans to kill these crucial bills. At the same time, corporate-backed Democrats pushed forward ineffective solutions like Strategic Water Supply, Advanced Technologies, and Carbon Capture Sequestration, all false promises that do nothing to address the real crisis.

  • We invite other organizations to join us in signing onto our letter, which outlines our concerns and demands for the 2025 New Mexico State LegislativeñSession. It’s time for bold action, not empty promises.
