School volunteers play an important role in enhancing a quality learning environment. As members of a group with the purpose of enriching and improving the lives of children, volunteers can be the spark that helps students recognize their own innate abilities to improve and achieve.

Classroom teachers or school administration wil contact you when volunteer opportunities present themselves. At that time, we will share the details of your requested assistance (what, when, where, etc).

Instructional support. IE working 1 on 1 or with small groups to assist academic learning in guided reading or math, etc.

Extra Recess Supervisor * All recess supervisors must wear reflective vests. Current First Aid certification is considered an asset.

Guest Teacher of a special skill or talent. IE athletic coach, teach about a hobby, read poetry/stories to children, share expertise in JH Options classes (ie art, drama, outdoor ed., fitness, etc)

Would you consider becoming a member of Penson School Council? *

Penson School Council meets 6 times per year; however, it is not necessary for you to commit to regular attendance at meetings. The purpose of School Council is to constructively discuss aspects pertaining to education and to act in an advisory capacity. Your involvement promotes a shared vision for education.

Would you consider becoming a member of the Parent Fundraising Society? *

Next year, the Fundraising Society executive will be stepping down so other parents/guardians can have a turn at this position. Parent Fundraising Society generates funds that directly enhance student learning and experiences at Penson School. IE new playground in 2011. The fundraising initiatives they organize and execute have direct impact on extras we are able to offer. All students benefit from this invaluable resource. .

Everyone working or volunteering at Penson School should remember to speak words of encouragement and build up students, teachers, staff, and board members. We share the responsibility of gaurding the integrity of our school body, whether at home, school, or in public. Step in and stop conversations that are out of place.

Respect the confidentiality of the teacher and students, and refrain from discussing them outside the school environment. If you have any questions or concerns, share them with the teacher or Principal, in that order.

Remember that the teacher is the professional in charge of the classroom. The teacher will assign tasks to volunteers, which in his/her opinion are in the best educational interests of all the students in the classroom.

Practice tolerance and respect towards students and teachers with whom you are in contact. Be sensitive to the teaching role. Strive for acceptance of all students.

Notify the teacher in advance if you would like to volunteer inside or outside the classroom. There may be times when your help is not needed. Understand that different techers and different classes have different requirements for outside help.

Be dependable. If you agree to undertake a task, follow it through by attending at the times and dates arranged. Be realistic about the amount of time you can spend. If you must be late or absent, arrange for an acceptable substitute or inform the school in advance.

Understand that the classroom is designed as a place of learning. Younger children (i.e siblings) are very distracting to a class and arrangement for childcare outside the school should be made before your volunteer session.

Please remember to sign in and out at the main office before you begin/end your volunteer duties. WCB and PWSD #76 insurance regulations require that all volunteers working in a school sign in before their session begins.

Volunteers play an important role in modeling safe practices. As a volunteer, we need your support in ensuring a safe place for all. You are expected to help by complying with Occupational Health and Safety legislation. This legislation expects you to follow all Health and Safety guidelines which includes taking reasonable steps to protect Health and Safety of yourself and others.
