Support AFSCME's Strike on November 13th!
On November 13th, AFSCME 3299 members will be holding a strike to fight income inequality at UC and the outsourcing that drives it. Our workers make up 27,000 service and patient care jobs at our university campuses and medical centers. They clean up after you, feed you, maintain the buildings, and look after you when you are sick. Essentially, they run the UC.
However, their work is being undercut by growing UC outsourcing practices which have increased from 7,000 to 10,000 outsourced workers in the past 3 years. This trend is alarming because the quality of life for these outsourced workers is devastatingly low and will be the future for all our workers if we allow this trend to continue. Our members already represent the most diverse and lowest paid workers in the UC system with 79% of AFSCME workers being people of color.
This is especially true for Black union represented workers at UC who have declined by 37% in the past two decades, whereas the percentage of Black workers in outsourced jobs, with lower wages and no benefits, has grown to match previous levels.
We are asking all union members, students, faculty, patients and community members to stand with us on Nov 13th — the same day as the UC Regents meeting to demand they do the right thing and end inequality at UC.
