Petition to End the NC Death Penalty
The North Carolina death penalty is the apex of a criminal punishment system that incarcerates nearly 70,000 people in North Carolina, including children as young as 11 years old. It sits at the top of a system that separates families, damages communities of color, and consumes unfathomable quantities of public resources — a system that has not yet reckoned with police violence against Black people. Our state’s capital punishment system was created in slavery, strengthened in the years of Jim Crow, and continues to disproportionately punish people of color while denying them the right to serve on juries.

In light of the death penalty’s deep entanglement with racism, I call on the North Carolina Task Force for Racial Equity in Criminal Justice to recommend the repeal of the North Carolina death penalty.

CDPL is collecting responses to this petition in an effort to show broad public support for ending the NC death penalty. Please add your name and become part of the movement.
