Some people believe that when a person dies, he or she goes to another stage of life. Some say that we go to heaven or hell, depending on how we lived. We will see what the Bible says.

 Genesis 2:7, NKJV- “And the Lord God formed man of the (a)_____ of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the (b)_______ of life; and man became a living being.” The term “being” is translated as “soul” in the original King James Version.  Dust + Breath of Life = Living Being, or Dust + Breath = Living Soul

2. What happens at death?
 Ecclesiastes 12:7, NKJV- “Then the (a)________ will return to the earth as it was, And the (b)________ will return to God who gave it.”  Dust minus Spirit, or Dust minus Breath of Life = Dead Person or Dead Soul. Note that in the Bible, breath of life and spirit are often one and the same. This spirit is not the same as the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Godhead.

3. So where does the soul go at death?
 Ezekiel 18:4, NKJV- "Behold, all souls are Mine; The soul of the father As well as the soul of the son is Mine; The soul who sins shall (a)______.”  A living soul is the same as a living person. The soul represents the whole person. The body and spirit make up the soul.  The body goes to the grave. The spirit, “returns to God” as we learned above. So the soul ceases to exist.

4. What happens during the state of death?
Ecclesiastes 9:5, 6, NKJV- “For the living know that they will die; But the dead know (a)________, And they have no more reward, For the memory of them is forgotten. Also their love, their hatred, and their (b)______ have now perished; Nevermore will they have a share In anything done under the (c)____.” The dead cannot hurt, worry, mourn, pray, or protect. 5. What does David, the Psalmist, say about death?

6.   Will the dead remain in the grave forever?
1 Thess. 4:16, NKJV- “For the Lord Himself will descend from (a)_______ with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will (b)_____ first. Revelation 20:5, NKJV- “But the rest of the dead did not live again until the thousand years were finished....” The followers of Jesus who have died will arise from their graves when Jesus returns to earth. The unsaved dead will be resurrected to face the judgment one thousand years late [See Lesson 5].
