This worksheet will help you develop your own SMART Goal for your ultimate career by using the information found on MyPACE about your Ultimate Career to ensure that your goal is SMART.

Now let’s modify this basic goal to make it SMART and change it from a dream to an actionable plan.  Let’s change it letter by letter, starting with “S” by making it more “Specific.”

Specific: Add details about the requirement of your ultimate career to ensure you have answered all of these questions:

What is the exact title of the career?

If there are specialties within your chosen career field, what specialty do you want?

What is the entry level salary for the career you chose?

Example: My ultimate career is to be a Nurse Anesthetist and earn $82,470 a year.

Measurable: Make sure your sentence or sentences have a way to track progress and measure your success:

How will you measure your progress?

What education is required for your ultimate career?

How long will that take?

How many years of experience are required?

How long will that take?

How will you know when you’ve met your goal?

Example: After my bachelors degree, I will work two years as a critical care nurse. Than I will go back to school to earn my masters degree as a Nurse Anesthetists. Finally, I will get my ultimate career and be a Nurse Anesthetist and earn $82,470 a year.

Attainable: Modify your goal further to make sure it is realistic by making sure it answers these questions:

What skills are needed?

What resources are necessary?

Is the goal within your reach?

Are you in control of achieving this goal?

Example: I will use grant money and scholarships to go to college for a bachelors degree in nursing. Than I will use the skills I got in my CNA training and the degree to get a job and work two years as a critical care nurse. Than I will go back to school to earn my masters degree as a Nurse Anesthetists. Finally, I will get my ultimate career and be a Nurse Anesthetist and earn $82,470 a year.
