Hundreds of Hamas terrorists invaded Israel and attacked villages, towns, and kibbutzim at the southern border. They raped and slaughtered innocent people, torturing and murdering entire families. 

More Jews died on October 7th than on any other day since the Holocaust. Civilians were executed in their homes, on their streets, and at a music festival celebrating peace. The Israeli death toll has exceeded 1,400, with thousands more wounded. More than 200 innocents – babies, children, elderly women, and disabled people -- were kidnapped and taken into Gaza as hostages. Nearly thirty Americans were murdered, while more than 15 Americans are held hostage. This is hate-driven terror, not resistance. 

We commend the recent statement from the University and President Liz Magill, despite the unfortunate delay in forcefully condemning anti-Semitism. We now call upon the community at the University of Pennsylvania to stand together, with us, with our current leadership, and with Israel, to condemn these acts of terrorism and to condemn anti-Semitism. Israel is entitled, indeed obligated, to defend itself with strength and determination. 

Many of us at the University of Pennsylvania community have family, friends, and colleagues in Israel, and they need our support, as more horrific stories emerge. Our faculty comes from varied faiths, nationalities, and political beliefs. Together we express our grief for and support of the people of Israel as they face this unspeakable tragedy. We mourn the loss of innocent Palestinian and Israeli lives.

The current war is an involuntary war for Israel, prompted by a brutal terrorist attack. There can be no moral equivalence. Israel was forced into war by acts of evil and terror. Sadly, tens of thousands of innocents are now suffering and dying. 

We recognize that the University of Pennsylvania has students and members of the community from all regions, including from the Gaza Strip. We value our diversity, and we respect our Palestinian colleagues, students, neighbors, and friends. 

We hear words of hate on our campus, praising violence against Jews. These words should not be met with silence. Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences. We must not tolerate hateful speech on campus. We insist on respectful and civil discourse, and we condemn any forms of Islamophobia or anti-Semitism. 

We pray for the safety of our entire community and their families.
