Globus for Modern Research Data Management Challenges—9/25/25—11 - 11:45 AM (ET)

This is a high-level survey of the extensive research data management capabilities available on the Globus platform, aimed at researchers. We will describe common use cases and demonstrate how to get started with data transfer and sharing, using Globus Connect Personal on your laptop.

About the Presenter: Greg Nawrocki is responsible for ensuring subscribers are getting the most value from Globus by promoting user adoption. His experience includes building controls and diagnostics for high energy physics experiments, software development in the television and consumer products industry, working with the Globus Toolkit in the early days of Grid Computing, and as the technical lead for a data analytics company he co-founded. 

Greg holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Michigan State University and a M.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology. He enjoys bridging the gap between science and technology and the marketing and business development worlds.

Instrument Data Management and Automation—10/7/25—2 - 2:45 PM (ET)

Managing research data and compute tasks is increasingly complex and time-consuming, especially with the scale of modern instruments and collaborative projects. This session offers a practical overview of how Globus services enable the automation of research data and compute management, and thus eliminates repetitive manual steps and accelerates progress across every stage of the research data lifecycle.

We will present an overview of capabilities in the Globus platform for automation use cases, including routine data backup and integrity checks, end-to-end management of data from instruments such as cryoEM, next generation sequencers, and fMRI. The presentation will share case studies where these services are used to support instrument data processing at scale from acquisition, to analysis and publication, and for cases where automation is used to enforce best practices and secure policies.

About the Presenter: Rachana Ananthakrishnan leads the Globus department, which delivers a research IT platform to national and international research institutions. She currently serves on the Internet2 InCommon Steering Committee, Earth System Grid Federation Executive Committee, and Scientific Advisory Board for National Microbiome Data Collaborative. 

Her work is focused on cyberinfrastructure for enabling research across a variety of domains, and she has led security and data management for several NSF, DOE, and NIH funded initiatives. Rachana was a member of the Globus Toolkit engineering team and customer engagement teams, leading the efforts in web services and security technologies. Rachana received her MS in Computer Science at Indiana University, Bloomington.

Globus Compute: Federated Function as a Service for Research Cyberinfrastructure—10/14/25—1 - 1:45 PM (ET)

Growing data volumes, new computing paradigms, and increasing hardware heterogeneity are driving the need
to distribute computational tasks across a continuum of computing resources. The Function-as-a-Service (FaaS)
paradigm pioneered by cloud providers offers a potential solution. We will provide an overview of Globus Compute, a secure, reliable federated FaaS platform designed for research computing. We will describe the benefits to researchers (e.g., accessibility, scalability) and to administrators (e.g., reduced support burden, energy efficiency) enabled by distributed execution. We will also review a number of common use cases for the service.

About the Presenter: Vas Vasiliadis is the “customer guy” at Globus, the de facto standard platform for research data management, developed and operated by the University of Chicago. He is also a lecturer in the Masters Program in Computer Science at the University, where he teaches courses on Cloud Computing and Product Management. Vas has over 30 years of experience in operational and consulting roles, spanning strategy, marketing and technology, and was instrumental in bringing many emerging technologies as products to market. He consults with both global enterprises and early stage technology startups on product management and go-to-market strategy.

Globus Connect Server: Installation and Configuration (for CRISPIE partners)—10/23/25—1 - 2 PM (ET)

We will provide an overview of the process for installing and configuring Globus Connect Server to make your storage system(s) accessible via Globus. This is aimed at system administrators who will be responsible for their institution’s Globus deployment.

About the Presenter: Lev Gorenstein is a Solutions Architect at Globus (a University of Chicago non-profit service), enabling research data management at scale. A chemist by training, Lev previously conducted research in the area of computational chemistry, molecular modeling, and protein dynamics at Purdue’s Markey Center for Structural Biology, and worked at the Purdue Rosen Center for Advanced Computing (RCAC) as a Senior Computational Scientist. At RCAC, Lev provided advanced application management and support, as well as HPC education and engagement for HPC users at Purdue and nationwide.  His interest in computational and data management workflows led him to his current position at Globus, where he facilitates Globus adoption and applications worldwide.
