Thank you for being willing to share your story.
My goal is to collect these stories and present them to the leadership of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to show them there is a major issue with how sexual and other abuse allegations are handled in the Church, so we can fix the problem and make the Church a much safer place for all its members.
Unfortunately, accusations of abuse are often not handled appropriately by Church leaders. Sometimes survivors of abuse are even told to stop bringing up the issue.
Those accused of abuse are often not held accountable by the Church.
This is a personal mission for me, as this happened to my wife. She was sexually abused and trafficked by her parents in the most severe ways into her early 20s. We wrote letters to our Church leaders, their Church leaders, two apostles, and their mission president.
These accusations were never taken seriously by Church leaders. Her parents continued to attend the temple and serve their mission. We were told by their mission president that he had to "trust the interview process."
In other words, their word mattered much more than my wife's. As far as we know, no action was ever taken by the Church against them, and we never were given the opportunity to accuse them in front of any Church court.
This is WRONG.
It is NOT what Jesus would want happening in His Church.
Unfortunately, I feel that we are not alone.
If you were treated in a similar way, I would love to share your story.
In other words, if you or a loved one were a victim of abuse, told Church leaders, but were not satisfied with the response (either it was not taken seriously and/or no disciplinary action was taken against your abuser), I'd love to hear from you.
I plan to publish these stories in a book, and you are welcome to share as much or as little as you would like, and to be as anonymous as you would like.
Any proceeds from the book will be donated to
thehotline.org to help survivors of abuse.
I consider it a deep honor to be a part of sharing your story.
