CMAA Hawaii - August 2019 Luncheon RSVP
To increase the reliability of the Windward Oahu wastewater collection system, the City and County of Honolulu’s (City) Department of Environmental Services (ENV) designed and constructed the Kaneohe – Kailua Wastewater Conveyance & Treatment Facilities Project at a total Construction Cost of $375 Million. The KK Tunnel Project was the first phase of the program, an approximately 3-mile-long deep gravity sewer tunnel constructed to carry wastewater from Kaneohe’s Wastewater Pre-Treatment Facility to Kailua’s Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant. This state-of-the-art deep gravity sewer tunnel was constructed via a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) and was oversized in order to store and equalize storm flows and minimize the risks of wastewater overflows and spills. The tunnel replaces an aging preliminary treatment facility, pump station and force main. The subsequent project phases included constructing the Kailua Tunnel Influent Pump Station (TIPS) and the Kaneohe Tunnel Influent Facility (TIF) Projects. These projects incorporated major wastewater plant facilities on both ends of the tunnel and a new Tunnel Influent Pump Station on the Kailua side supporting up to 45 million gallons per day (MGD) of wastewater. Under the outstanding leadership of the City, the project team partnered together to maneuver through countless major technical and unforeseen challenges during construction resulting in the successful construction, startup, commissioning and acceptance of all three project phases ahead of the June 30, 2018 GCD deadline.
Please join us to hear the CM team’s story of the challenges and lessons from start through the finish line as the project team collaborated to complete the project on time and within budget. Parking and lunch will be provided.
