Two programs offered:
MAYJazz : Hot Jazz in the Summer for musicians, grades 9-12, who dig Jazz!This is our upper track program and is designed for grades 9-12 graders (having just completed) with Jazz experience. They must play a traditional Jazz instrument, e.g.: Alto, Tenor and Baritone Sax, Trumpet, Trombone, Guitar, Bass (electric or upright), and Drum Kit and Mallet/Auxiliary Percussion. Rehearsals will be geared toward a highly polished show showing off as many different styles as possible. 60 minutes of rehearsal will focus on learning selected Jazz pieces and developing ensemble sound, Style and Interpretation, Balance and Blend, Tuning and ?intonation, etc. The remaining 30 minutes of each rehearsal will focus on development of individual improvisation skills.
All MAYJazz : Hot Jazz in the Summer for kids, grades 5-8, who wanna learn to play Jazz!This program is designed for grades 5-8 (having just completed) with or without jazz experience. Can play on any band instrument and piano, guitar and bass (upright or electric). Strings are also welcomed. 60 minutes of rehearsal will focus on learning selected Jazz pieces and developing ensemble sound, Jazz Fundamentals, Balance and Blend, Tuning and Intonation, etc. The remaining 30 minutes of each rehearsal will focus on development of individual improvisation skills.
Students will experience three performances that will be free to the public. A fourth performance will be an optional trip to ValleyFair (cost under $100 - includes ticket and bus ride).
All rehearsal sessions take place on Sundays afternoons in Mankato. Director of MAYJazz and All MAYJazz is David J. Stordalen.
