Root Division is a visual arts non-profit located in the San Francisco's Mid-Market/SOMA district. Root Division's mission is to empower artists, promote community service, inspire youth, and enrich the Bay Area through engagement in the visual arts. In order to increase professional opportunities for Filipinx artists and to better serve our student population, we are currently seeking applicants for the 2018-19 Filipinx Teaching-Artist Fellowship.

The fellow will act as Resident Teaching Artist in our partner school sites, Bessie Carmichael Elementary School and the Filipino Education Center. Part of the commitment involves designing an art curriculum that incorporates monthly themes from the BCE/FEC cultural calendar, in which students participate in discussions and art-making around their transition to a new home in the U.S. The Fellow actively participates in developing and teaching lesson, and they should:
• Be fluent in both English and Tagalog.
• Demonstrate excellence in his/ her studio practice and/or art-making.
• Have one year of experience teaching or facilitating projects with groups.
• Have a passion for working with underserved students.
• Be available a minimum of 1-2 weekday afternoons per week from September 2018 through May 2019

In addition to teaching weekly in our Youth Education Program, the Fellow Artist will be part of the Studios Program, volunteering time towards Root Division's mission in any or all of the following areas:
• Teach art classes to adults in our Adult Education Program.
• Produce and install exhibitions for our Exhibitions & Events Program.
• Outreach and development for the organization and its fundraising events.

In exchange for 20 hours per month of service with a focus on teaching youth, the artist will receive:
• Free studio space for 12 months in our Studios Program located at 1131 Mission Street, San Francisco.
• Teaching Stipend of $1000 ($500 paid in Dec and $500 paid in June).
• Artist Stipend of $800 for art materials / production costs.
• A unique opportunity and experience teaching youth.
• Fellows are also eligible for free housing for 3 months (January - March 2019) at The Growlery.

• Bilingual in English and Tagalog.
• Demonstrated commitment to creating opportunities for underserved children and/or adults.
• Minimum of one year of experience working with groups of children or youth.
• Enthusiasm for working individually and as a team to serve the community.
• Be available to contribute 20 volunteer hours per month to the organization, which includes two weekday afternoons per week.
• Commitment of one year to the Fellowship/Studios Program: July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019.
• Able to attend monthly All Artist Meetings (7-8pm) on 7/11, 8/1, 8/29, 10/3, 10/31, 11/28, 1/2, 1/30, 2/27, 4/3, 5/1, 5/29

1. Completed Online Studios Application Form.
2. Cover letter: Please introduce yourself, tell us why you are interested in the Root Division community, and how this fellowship would impact you as an artist and/or teacher. Please add three references (contact name, email, phone) at the bottom of the letter.
3. Artist resume and/or Professional resume (including name and contact info.)
4. Examples of your own artwork (8-12 images and/or video documentation) with a corresponding image list.
5. Artist Statement about your artwork (as seen in images submitted).
6. Examples of student work (6-8 images and/or video documentation) from successful projects in which you worked with children or youth.
7. Two example lesson plans for art projects, indicating the appropriate target grade level(s), K-5.

Application process includes submitting completed Fellowship Application Form and required materials. Finalists must be available between June 11-18, 2018 for interviewing first with Root Division’s Artist Selection Committee, and subsequently with Filipino Education Center school staff.
