The activities of the main programme of DOCA will take place 20 April 2024 at the Institute for Humanities and Information Technologies (IGUMO).
Topic of DOCA 2024: ‘I Knew You Would Say That’1
Roland Barthes2 characterized the concept of ‘intertext’3 as a vast text, in which everything has already been said and the new is created by combining original elements, direct or indirect quotations4, allusions5, reminiscences6, proper names, verbal clichés7, references, and other forms, known as diangu8.
Each text represents a new fabric woven from old quotations.
Culture, as a form of human existence, is characterized by the conservation of cultural codes and a high concentration of precedent phenomena9 and non-verbal precedent phenomena10 for transmitting the experience of generations.
DOCA 202411 is an occasion to talk about cultural memory, visual anthropology, the genealogy of art through interpretation, reproduction with possible changes.

2 Roland Barthes (1915-1980), French
philosopher, literary theorist, and aesthetician who developed the concepts of
intertext and intertextuality.
3 Each text is an intertext: other texts of preceding
culture and texts of the surrounding culture are present in it at different
levels in more or less recognizable forms.
4 Quotation is a word-to-word excerpt
from any text or someone’s speech.
5 Allusion is a stylistic figure that
contains a reference, analogy, or hint to a literary, historical, mythological,
or political fact embedded in textual culture or in spoken language.
6 Reminiscence is an implicit quotation, quoting
without quotation marks.
7 Clichés are ready-made speech blocks.
8 Diangu (典 故) in Chinese culture denote
classical precedents, stories, quotations from classical sources, aphorisms,
winged words and expressions. Diangu wasn’t considered to be plagiarism (this
concept was absent in China). Oppositely, it was regarded as the author’s
erudition and was highly appreciated. Diangu has the function of collective
cultural memory but also actualizes certain traits of the reader.
9 Precedent phenomena are vivid descriptions of
reality through a precedent appeal to texts and widely known images that are
significant to the audience. This technique contributes to enhancing the main
properties of a media text: informativeness, expressiveness, and persuasiveness.
10 Non-verbal precedent phenomena include paintings,
sculptures, pieces of architecture, and musical compositions.
11 DOCA (Days of Contemporary Art) is an international festival and an
independent educational project aimed at popularizing contemporary art.
