The purpose of this course is to provide participants with foundational knowledge and understanding of how chronic illness impacts mental health and how to support clients navigating chronic illness in affirming, trauma-informed, and socially-just ways.
Themes explored will include: ableism and internalized ableism; chronic illness burnout; grief; identity; and navigating medical systems (including medical gaslighting, medical trauma, and self-advocacy). Participants will examine potential biases we may be bringing into the therapeutic relationship and treatment goals and gain effective ways of supporting clients through their experience with chronic illness.
The format of this program will involve an online video lecture, an experiential exercise, and time for questions. Please bring basic art supplies and paper (i.e. sketchbook or blank paper, old magazines, markers, colored pencils, or your medium of choice for a short artmaking experience).
