Breakfast Invitation - Unfollowing misogyny: A conversation on digital technology and violence against women and girls

Despite technology and artificial intelligence (AI) bringing about a series of advancements, it also furthers discriminatory practices by perpetuating negative and gender-based stereotypes. It occurs as part of a continuum that is often connected to offline violence and, in turn, reinforces other forms of violence, such as domestic abuse, stalking, and physical aggression. Cyberbullying and online harassment, particularly on social media platforms among youth, are also at unprecedented levels, while deep fakes and AI undressing are becoming more pervasive. All these forms of technologically-facilitated violence against women and girls (VAWG) are rooted in gender inequality, discrimination, and power imbalances. Its impact can be as harmful, with adverse effects on the health and well-being of women and girls, as well as detrimental economic, social, and political impacts.

Hosted by Spotlight Initiative, the United Nations High-Impact Initiative to end violence against women and girls, this panelist event will bring together influencers working on the topic of AI, as well as representatives of civil society and policy makers to explore innovative approaches to addressing technology-facilitated violence against women and girls and how these interventions can be scaled up.
