11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. (Central Time) Online via Zoom
This workshop develops skills to incorporate critical language awareness (CLA) in world language education. CLA is a framework that emphasizes an understanding of the role language plays in reproducing social inequities. To provide context for hands-on activities, the presenter will briefly review research findings that illustrate the significance and transformative potential of CLA for language learners, while addressing common misunderstandings about what CLA means and aims to do. Then, attendees will discuss small and large ideas for integrating CLA into lesson plans, teaching practices, and materials, along with relevant resources. Participants will be engaged by examining examples and adapting them to their language-specific contexts.
After this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Define critical language awareness (CLA) and identify its pedagogical objectives;
- Describe challenges and misconceptions often associated with CLA and language education; and
- Identify opportunities to incorporate CLA into teaching practices, materials, and lesson planning
