It has been our experience that many new gardeners are unaware of the substantial amount of time and effort that is involved in maintaining a garden plot. While planting and harvesting are pleasant tasks, your major task will likely be keeping the weeds in check. This requires several hours every week. It is important that you are willing to make this commitment because DC Parks and Recreation requires that gardens be monitored periodically and neglected plots be reassigned. So if you are not able to maintain your plot, you may have to return it to the Association.
If you are hesitant about making the commitment to maintain a plot, there are still ways to get your hands dirty. You can volunteer to help out on our workdays, which are the second Saturday (10 am to noon) of each month except August. Also you can offer to help out a gardener who falls ill or goes on vacation.
If you are willing to provide the time and effort needed to maintain a garden plot, fill in your contact information below.
Plots become available and are reassigned throughout the growing season, which ends November 30 of each year. Plots are assigned on a first come/first served basis so please be patient!
You must be a resident of the District of Columbia to apply. The membership committee will contact you as soon as your plot becomes available. If you have any questions, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
