Volunteer Application

Thank you for your interest in volunteering at Free Geek!

After completing this form, we'll send you a link to sign up for a brief, in-person orientation where you'll get to see the space you'll be working in and learn more about Free Geek and our volunteer program. Once you've completed orientation, you'll have access to sign up for Warehouse volunteer shifts. If you're interested in Reuse work, you'll do one additional paired training shift after orientation, and then you can book any open Reuse slot.

Warehouse volunteer shifts are available Tuesday through Saturday, with a morning spot from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM and an afternoon spot from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM.

Reuse volunteer shifts are available Monday through Saturday, with shifts running from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

Volunteers in the warehouse will primarily be tasked with taking apart desktop computers and other electronic devices for recycling. The work will involve both standing and sitting, lifting devices off of shelves, and utilizing hand tools as well as light power tools. Volunteers may also be asked to assist the warehouse staff in receiving, organizing, and sorting incoming technology donations. Volunteers are welcome to take as many breaks as they need throughout the day.

Volunteers in our reuse program will work on refurbishing laptops and desktops, testing components like RAM, GPUs, CPUs, and drives, testing monitors, peripherals, and cables, and working through our retro and specialty tech as it comes in. The work involves both standing and sitting, light lifting, and using hand tools. Staff will set you up at the right station based on what's on the floor that day.

Free Geek is a place where we do not tolerate discrimination against people based on their race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexuality, or social class. We expect both our staff and our volunteers to uphold these values together, and any failure to do so may lead to termination of your volunteer opportunity.

We don't currently offer a formal program where volunteer hours can be exchanged for a free computer or other tech. That said, we look out for the people who show up for us. If a technology need comes up while you're volunteering, talk to staff and we'll see how we can help. If you specifically need help accessing a device, please reach out to our Digital Equity team at computerfriends@freegeek.org.

General Health and Safety Procedures

Failure to follow any of these may result in being asked to leave for the day, or not to return — depending on the severity.

Footwear & clothing — Closed-toe shoes are required. Wear comfortable clothes you don't mind getting dirty, and skip dangling jewelry or accessories that could snag. Gloves and eye protection are provided. The warehouse isn't temperature controlled and the garage door stays open most of the day, so dress for the weather.

No smoking — Not in the building or within 10 feet of any door, window, vent, or opening. Includes e-cigarettes and vaporizers.

No drugs or alcohol — Illicit drugs are prohibited on the property. Alcohol is not allowed during working hours. Don't work under the influence of anything that could impair your ability to work safely.

No guns — Prohibited on the property, except for law enforcement.

No animals — Not permitted in the warehouse, including service animals.

Forklift safety — Always assume the driver can't see or hear you. Never cross the path of a forklift unless the driver has directly given you the OK.

Lifting — Use proper technique, don't lift more than you can handle, and ask for help with anything large or heavy.

Keep exits & pathways clear — Never block hallways, exit doors, electrical panels, first aid kits, or eyewash stations with boxes, bins, or equipment.

No running or horseplay.

Hygiene — Come bathed and in clean clothes; you may be working closely with others. Wash hands after handling devices and before entering the break room or kitchen.

Accidents & emergencies — Report any accident, near miss, or first aid incident to the Warehouse Manager or Reuse Manager. To report a fire or emergency, tell any Free Geek employee.

If yes, how many hours do you need and by what date?
Are you interested in helping Free Geek staff with off-site events?
On occasion Free Geek will participate in tech-drives in communities not close to our building, and it is useful for staff to have a few extra helping hands as they can sometimes get very busy.
