Unarmed Civilian Protection (Accompaniment) Training

Unarmed Civilian Protection (or Accompaniment) is a proven and effective methodology for the non-partisan, direct protection and accompaniment of civilians, reduction of hostility, as well as increasing of empathy and local peace infrastructures. This workshop will be largely experiential and learning-by-doing. The skills learned can be modified and applied in many facets of life, including political demonstrations, local events, individual or group accompaniment, neighborhood conflicts, and international conflicts.
• an increased awareness of the meaning, approach, and examples of unarmed civilian
• acquisition of skills to use in local community peacemaking, domestic events and
international conflict zones
• information on how to pursue involvement with domestic and international organizations
engaged in developing this practice
*Opportunity for immediate deployment: This training will enable you to participate in offering non-partisan UCP at the March for Life event on Friday Jan. 24th, from 1-3 pm at the Supreme Court.
Introduction Session: Requested payment is a sliding scale for what you are able to offer from $25-$50, but it is not mandatory because no one will be turned away for being unable to pay. This training is provided by the DC Peace Team, which unleashes the power of ordinary civilians to increasingly serve their communities as nonviolent peacemakers and resisters to injustice. The DC Peace Team lives this mission by: deploying unarmed civilian protection units, providing training in various nonviolent skills, and facilitating dialogues and restorative justice approaches.

Eli S. McCarthy, Ph.D. is a co-founder of the DC Peace Team. He has been deployed and coordinated UCP units at the Unite the Right Rally in DC, Republican National Convention in Cleveland, OH, March for Life in DC, Israeli/Palestinian demonstration in VA, etc. He also was deployed with the Nonviolent Peaceforce as an election monitor in Palestine. In addition, he teaches at Georgetown University in Justice and Peace Studies. Eli has published a book called “Becoming Nonviolent Peacemakers: A Virtue Ethic for Catholic Social Teaching and U.S. Policy,” (2012) along with numerous journal articles such as "Truth and Reconciliation Commissions: Toward a More Just U.S. Society," and "Will You Really Protect Us Without a Gun?: Unarmed Civilian Peacekeeping in the U.S." He has been formed by multiple trips to Haiti working with the persons who were poor, and working with persons who were homeless in Boston and DC.
