A Better Beginning for Separating and Divorcing Families

To satisfy WI Statute 767.115 and the local family court order, the University of Wisconsin-Extension offers "A Better Beginning" educational program for separating and divorcing families. Parents of minor children, and all children (ages 6 through 16) must attend a set of two 2-hour classes. Mary Wood, Family Living Agent for Buffalo and Pepin Counties, and Annie Lisowski, Buffalo County 4-H Youth Development Educator, will lead the separate classes for parents and children. You may expect to be treated with respect, compassion and support in a safe and confidential environment in these classes.

This educational program provides families with specific strategies to increase family resilience, strengthen relationships, effectively communicate, manage stress, and use support networks. Both parents and children will have homework assignments between the first and second classes. Research shows that families benefit in the short and long-term by learning the information and skills that these classes contain, including greater likelihood of positive outcomes for children.

Parents will learn ways to protect their children from harmful effects of the changes and events taking place in their family. They will also develop plans for a positive co-parenting relationship, keeping a focus on effects of their behaviors and decisions through their children’s eyes.

Parents often wonder what to tell their children about this class. Other children in the program have said that they have had fun learning more about how to talk to their parents, have a better understanding about what will happen next, and feel less stressed about change in their families.

The following registration form lists the upcoming classes that are scheduled in the upcoming months.
