Quest University’s fourth annual Power, Race and Privilege Symposium will take place on the unceded territory of the Skwxwú7mesh peoples. We are grateful to have the opportunity to work and learn in this blessed territory.

This Symposium is a student created and organised event that is funded by the Quest University Students' Association and the Quest University Office of the President. The symposium aims to foster critical awareness and dialogue about the dynamics of racial oppression and inequality. By putting Quest faculty and students in conversation with other respected scholars and activists, we hope to deepen our understanding of the ways that power and marginalisation function both on our campus and beyond.

We are excited and honoured to learn from a wide range scholars and activists who bring with them diverse understandings of oppression and resistance. We acknowledge that there are many other stories and ways of knowing that exist, and hope that we can be one small part of broader movements for liberation.

We, the student organisers and the Quest community, invite you to participate in this free event!

ACCESSIBILITY
PRPS will be held in the Multipurpose Room in the University Services Building at Quest University Canada. The Multipurpose Room is a very large room on the bottom floor of the University Services Building.

Accessible parking is available 120m from the University Services Building. The main floor of the University Services Building has two double-door entrances, one of which has button-activated doors.

Two multi-stall washrooms are on the same floor as the MPR with accessible stalls in each. These washrooms are usually gendered, however they will have signs indicating that they can be used by anyone of any gender during the event. Two single-stall accessible non-gendered washrooms are one floor above the MPR, and can be accessed by stairs or elevator. On the main floor of the University Services building, two floors above the MPR, there are two gendered multi-stall washrooms with accessible stalls and one (permanently) non-gendered multi-stall washroom with an accessible stall. **None of these washrooms have button-activated doors.**

There is fluorescent lighting in the Multipurpose Room and throughout the University Services Building.

All speakers at PRPS, including audience members asking questions, will be using microphones.

Large-print programs will be available at the registration table. Print out versions of speaker presentation slides can be made available upon request (please include this request in the last box below).

There will be a play area available under the supervision of a vounteer who is First Aid and CPR certified where you can leave your children. Please sign up below.

We ask those attending PRPS to refrain from wearing scented products in order to help us create a scent-reduced space.

The event will be recorded and photographs will be taken. There will be no flash photography.

Audience chairs are sturdy and do not have arm rests.

We will have at least one emotional support person available all day. Due to space constraints, we do not have a quiet room available nearby the Multipurpose Room. However, event organizers and volunteers can direct you to quieter and more private areas if you are unfamiliar with the Quest campus.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns around accessibility, please email rowan.thillayekerr@questu.ca or sahar.thomson@questu.ca. Accessibility is an utmost priority at this event and we will do whatever we can do ensure anyone who wishes to participate in this event is included.

Kairos blanket exercise
PRPS 2019 is working with the Kairos Canadian ecumenical justice initiatives to offer you their Trademarked Blanket Exercise, a unique, participatory history lesson.

From the Kairos website:

The KAIROS Blanket Exercise™ program is a unique, participatory history lesson – developed in collaboration with Indigenous Elders, knowledge keepers and educators – that fosters truth, understanding, respect and reconciliation among Indigenous and non-indigenous peoples.

Developed in response to the Report of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples in 1996 –which recommended education about Canadian-Indigenous history as one of the key steps to reconciliation — the KAIROS Blanket Exercise (KBE) covers more than 500 years in an experiential workshop that aims to foster understanding about our shared history as Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. Since its creation, the Exercise has been updated several times to include new information such as the 2015 Truth and Reconciliation final report.

During the KBE, participants walk on blankets representing the land and into the role of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples by reading scrolls and carrying cards which ultimately determine their outcome as they literally ‘walk’ through situations that include pre-contact, treaty-making, colonization and resistance.   Participants are guided through the experience by trained facilitators (who read the script and assume the roles of European explorers and settlers) and Indigenous Elders or knowledge keepers. The Exercise concludes with a debriefing, conducted as a `talking circle’, during which participants discuss the learning experience, process their feelings, ask questions, share insights and deepen their understanding.

Since its creation in 1997, tens of thousands of KAIROS Blanket Exercises have been conducted in Canada and around the world, including in the United States, Guatemala, and Australia. By engaging participants on both emotional and intellectual levels, the KBE is able to both educate and create understanding between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples … in Canada and throughout the world!
