Dear President Fuhrman, Provost James, Co-Chairs of the Board of Trustees John W. Hyland, Jr. and William D. Rueckert, and Public Safety Officers John DeAngelis and Yeremy Chavez of Teachers College,
In the wake of the recent Presidential election, we - the undersigned students, faculty, staff, and alumni - urge you to take immediate action to make Teachers College a Sanctuary Campus for students, faculty, and staff who face deportation under President-elect Donald J. Trump’s proposed policies. Similar measures have already been taken by our home city of New York, as well as colleges and universities across the country, and there is no reason why we, a community so strongly committed to social justice, should fail to stand in solidarity by showing our staunch unwillingness to facilitate the xenophobic, racist, and ultimately unjust ends toward which these policies aim.
We also urge you, now more than ever, to provide strong institutional support for women, people of color, LGBTQ community members, Muslims, low-income students, and all other individuals whose safety will also be severely jeopardized by Trump's proposed policies and the hatred and violence he and his allies have legitimized. It will not be enough to simply embrace inclusion and diversity; we must also materially support the commitment to inclusion and diversity that defines our community by doing everything we can to ensure the safety and well-being of its members.
In light of these facts, we ask that you take concrete and immediate action to ensure the material and psychological well-being of your students, including the following measures:
** Issue a strong statement showing your solidarity and willingness to join the schools and universities around the country who have already spoken out against the proposed changes to immigration policy;
** Refuse voluntary information sharing with ICE/CBP across all aspects of the College;
** Refuse ICE physical access to all land owned or controlled by the college;
** Refuse to comply with any requests on the part of the federal government that might put any members of our community at risk;
** Guarantee financial aid for students whose ability to fund their studies at TC would be threatened by the repeal of DACA;
** Provide free consultation with immigration specialists for community members who would be threatened by the repeal of DACA;
** Guarantee access to mental health professionals who have cultural competency in working with politically marginalized communities and trauma-related issues of familial separation and the chronic threat of deportation;
** Provide resources, counseling, and training to respond to instances of hate-speech, harassment, intimidation, and physical violence, including funding for free basic self-defense classes for community members;
** Provide clear communication about how to access all of the resources listed above.
We acknowledge that this is a large step, but it is a step that needs to be taken, and one for which there is both legal and social precedent: similar petitions directed at other colleges and universities have mentioned an internal 2011 ICE memo, which declares that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers are subject to certain restrictions upon entering college campuses, and on Monday, November 21 Columbia Provost John Coatsworth announced that the University would increase financial aid and other support to undocumented students who lose the right to work. There is no good reason why we can’t do the same. To stand idly by while injustices are committed is to be complicit in those injustices. We must, therefore, give the full support of our institutional voice and strength to this growing movement so that it can prevent those injustices from ever taking place.
Finally, there is nothing to say that the legal precedent, cited above, ensuring even the possibility of sanctuary will not be repealed; the political and judicial climate of our nation is changing rapidly and unpredictably. We at Teachers College, however, are a community uniquely suited to the spirit and enactment of civil disobedience. We are deeply committed to social justice and, as President Fuhrman noted in her letter, we are determined to make the world “safer, healthier, better educated, and more equitable.” Not only do we “support and defend intellectual integrity and courage,” we embody intellectual integrity and courage, and we do not hesitate to disagree with and disavow, with the full force of our convictions, policies that threaten the safety or well-being of any member of our community. We must recognize and act upon the fact that right now our commitment to social justice requires us to practice what we teach: we must place ourselves courageously at the vanguard of human rights, and do everything in our power, sanctioned or not, to fight the racism and intolerance that threaten our students, our practice, our community, our nation, and our humanity.
Sincerely,
Tomas Rocha
