This is the day of the Conception of the Theotokos, one of the days of the Orthodox calendar where we express liturgically the Church's view that life begins at conception (the others are the feast of the Annunciation and the feast of the Conception of St. John the Baptist).
Strictly speaking, one only need fast from midnight before partaking of Holy Communion. However, this follows the letter, but certainly not the spirit of preparing for Holy Communion. As we do on Pascha night, one should fast about 8 hours before communing. Please contact Fr. Gregory with questions.
