The Church of St. Illtyd
The history of St Illtyd’s Church dates back to the time of the Saint himself.
Illtyd was a 6th Century teacher. Tradition has it that he used to retire during Lent to the banks of the River Nedd, at a point where the present church now stands.
In the Norman period, the church was rebuilt in stone but apart from this, very little is known of its development over the centuries. However, in 1850 it was decided to restore, repair and enlarge the building to the form in which we find it today.
The Friends of St Illtyd’s are a dedicated group who are passionate about the importance of the building and its place in the community. We aim to conserve the church and its grounds for future generations and encourage its use by the whole community. Not only is the church used for continuing prayer and worship but it is also used for other events.
We are prepared to express our goodwill by becoming a ‘Friend’ and by providing funds for the future, which may be used towards repairs or development that may be needed within the church.
