Volunteer Interest

Open School's mission is to develop connection, capability, and confidence in disconnected youth through relationship-based, quality learning experiences that result in academic, personal, and community success. Open School inspires community, sparks learning and transforms lives through Academics, Equity and Advocacy. 86% of our students are low-income, and 75% are youth of color.

At Open School we recognize that there is a historic and persistent achievement gap between white students and students of color; closing that achievement gap while raising the achievement of all students is a top priority of our organization. Race must cease to be a reliable predictor of students’ achievement and success. In order to achieve this goal we are committed to creating and fostering racial diversity at every level of the organization including but not limited to volunteers, staff, students, and leadership.

Program Overviews:

• Open School North (formerly Open Middle School) helps kids develop a sense of purpose, connection and smarts in 6th–8th grade so they are set up to do their best in high school. Located in North Portland, it serves 60 students from Portland Public Schools.

• Open School East (formerly Open School) is a new 7th–12th grade college prep school in East Multnomah County that works with kids who are most likely to drop out of public schools. At Open School, these same students excel academically, graduate, go to college, and pursue meaningful careers. Starting with a class of 46 in 2014, the school will serve 270 students from six school districts by 2019.

• Step Up helps 9th graders who have fallen the furthest behind make a smooth transition to and through their high school career. Each year, the program keeps 300 kids in school and thriving academically at three Portland Public high schools—Roosevelt, Madison, and Franklin.
