Hey there,
Thank you so much for expressing your interest in becoming a volunteer here at Heads Above The Waves.
We’re looking for volunteers to help run the HATW shop in the Corp Market in Cardiff, helping customers find cool merch, share our mission with everyone who walks through our door and lend a listening ear to those who might need it. During quiet times it’s a great opportunity to catch up on a book or tick something off your to do list.
About us:
Heads Above The Waves is a not for profit mental health organisation that raises awareness of depression and self harm in young people. We deliver a range of in-person and online workshops aimed at people aged 11-18 to introduce creative coping techniques as an alternative to self harm. Through our work we encourage open conversations about self harm and help to signpost further support. You can find out more about our work here, and a link to our resources here.
To help fund our workshops, we sell merch with a message to help start conversations around mental health. We’re looking for people to run the shop Tuesday-Saturday, welcoming customers in, chatting to them about our merch and mission behind it.
Our shop is located in the heart of Canton and includes a sofa, laptop, hot drinks station and other amenities that make it a nice place to hang out.
So if you love chatting to folks and you’re looking for a way to support Heads Above The Waves’ mission, then this could be the perfect opportunity for you.
What can you expect from this role?
As a Shop Volunteer you will:
Be supported to use your people skills to ensure that everyone feels welcome, helping to build upon the existing HATW community.
Learn about the day to day running of the shop, from sales skills to visual merchandising
Build your communication and customer service skills, signposting our resources to visitors
Help visitors get involved, whether it’s signing up new volunteers, deal with enquiries about our school workshops or delivering our school resource packs
Be a part of the friendly HATW team and have the opportunity to attend external events and festivals
Access to free mental health first aid training course*
Enjoy discount lunch deals from local businesses
Earn time credits via Tempo Time Credits (redeemable at local partners e.g. Chapter, Sherman Theatre etc.)
Earn discounted and free merch via our volunteer reward programme.
*Courses run twice a year.
What skills do you need for this role?
As the face of the shop, we’re looking for people who:
Feel passionately about raising awareness of depression and self harm in young people
Enjoy talking to people and creating a welcoming and friendly environment
Enjoy offering information and advice about our merch, as well as the wider work that we do to support young people
Can maintain a clean and tidy shop floor, ensuring shelves are well-stocked and ready for customers to shop from
Have a can-do approach and are eager to develop skills in customer service
Can commit to a day (10-5) on a regular basis (ideally weekly, but every fortnight or once a month would be great too).
