Shutdown Academy Training Program Application

We invite you to apply for Advocacy Assembly’s Internet Shutdown Academy (AA-ISA) Training Program

Do you worry about the risk of internet shutdowns in your country? Would you like to develop expertise on the many ways you can prepare for and fight back against shutdowns?

Due to the unprecedented interest in the last round of the AA-ISA training program, we are soliciting applications for a new cohort of future leaders to fight back against internet shutdowns.

The Internet Shutdown Advocacy Self-Guided Program is a program designed to equip you with a range of skills to develop advocacy campaigns, research and trainings to fight back against shutdowns and to provide opportunities for networking with other activistsm and engagement with experts and donors.

The program will cover a variety of topics, including how to technically measure internet shutdowns, how to circumvent internet shutdowns using common tools and strategies, how to build an internet shutdown advocacy campaign, how to engage with the private sector, and when to use strategic litigation when shutdowns violate the law.

Here's how the Internet Shutdown Self-guided program will work:
  • Each week for seven weeks, participants will receive an email with instructions to take one or two online courses. Participants will have the week to take the course(s) on their own time. The courses are all different, but should take on average about one hour to complete.
  • There will also be some supplementary discussion spaces and online activities arranged to facilitate networking and future opportunities.
  • If you complete all of the shutdown courses throughout the seven weeks, you will receive an Advocacy Assembly Internet Shutdown Academy expert competion certificate to demonstrate your competence on these issues.
To participate in this program, please fill out the short form below.
  • No prior knowledge about internet shutdowns is necessary, but you should have some understanding of how your community might be harmed by internet shutdowns and what you think you can contribute when it comes to fighting back against censorship and shutdowns
  • You must be able to commit ~1-2 hours a week to the program from Feburary through March, 2024. As this is a asynchronous program, you will be able to schedule this time around your other commitments, but you will need to do the work!
  • You must have regular access to a computer and internet in order to participate in the course
  • The core course materials will be available in Spanish, French, Arabic, Farsi, Swahili, Portuguese, and English
  • You should be excited about the idea of learning new advocacy skills & putting them into practice!

If you are interested in applying for this course and you meet the requirements above, please fill out the application below by Monday, January 29th.
