Presentation title: "Freshwater HABs in the Mississippi Sound, an unexpected result of the 2019 Bonnet Carre spillway opening."

Brief Description: The opening if the Bonnet Carre spillway for the second time in 2019 released an unprecedented volume of fresh water into the Mississippi Sound. This freshwater incursion had a number of severe impacts on the ecosystem of the Mississippi Sound, including a near complete loss of oysters on affected reefs. It also pushed two species of cyanobacteria that are normally found only in freshwater lakes and ponds into the sound, and resulted in the beaches of southern Mississippi being closed for much of the summer. The USM School of Ocean Science and Engineering was tasked with assisting MDEQ and MDMR in research to establish the effects of the spillway opening. I will discuss our data and results to date from these efforts.
